Vera star Brenda Blethyn previews the series’ first Christmas Special ahead of its 13th season.

Vera will come to an end after 14 series, it has been confirmed, as Brenda Blethyn prepares to shoot her final scenes as the famous detective.

It was back in 2011 that Vera made its debut on ITV, with both leading lady Brenda, now 78, and sidekick David Leon completely unaware at the time that the show would go onto be one of the biggest dramas on British television. And now, as it basks in worldwide popularity and gears up for the filming of its new series, the end is on the horizon for Vera.

The news of Vera coming to an end was announced by ITV on Monday morning, with it being revealed that the drama will wrap up after two last two hour feature length tales set to air in 2025.

Kate Barlett, creative director of Silverprint Pictures, the production company behind Vera commented: “It is the end of an era and has been an extraordinary journey over fourteen amazing series of Vera. So many wonderful and talented people have been involved in the making of Vera across all the series, but none of us would be here without two incredible women: firstly, the absolutely extraordinary talent of the inimitable Brenda Blethyn.

“She is brilliant as DCI Vera Stanhope, a truly iconic character of our times. And – of course – the amazing Ann Cleeves, author of the original novels and creator of DCI Vera Stanhope. We will all be very sad to say goodbye to Brenda and everyone involved in making the show.”
